Leicester City reached the FA Cup second round with a 4-2 win at Oxford City on Friday, overcoming a spirited challenge from their non-league hosts at the MGroup Stadium.

Louis Page, Emil Riis, Kamari Doyle and substitute Tommy Watson scored for the visitors. Scott Pollock and Josh Ashby twice brought Oxford back into contention in front of a record crowd of 3,462.

Pollock scores straight from a corner against boyhood club

Page opened the scoring after 16 minutes with a long-range strike into the top corner, but Oxford responded positively. Ludwig Francillette threatened with a close-range header before Pollock produced the first half’s memorable moment.

His corner went directly into the net in the 31st minute, bringing Oxford level against his boyhood club. It was his fourth goal of this FA Cup campaign, according to Oxford City’s official match report.

The hosts held Leicester until half-time, leaving the tie finely balanced at 1-1.

Leicester regain control before Ashby responds

Russell Martin introduced Harry Howell for Caleb Okoli at the interval, and the substitute supplied the cross for Riis to head Leicester back in front in the 53rd minute.

Doyle extended the advantage six minutes later, finishing from Page’s pass. Yet Oxford refused to let the tie slip away.

Captain Ashby struck in the 62nd minute after a ball over the top, reducing the deficit to 3-2 and keeping the possibility of an upset alive.

Watson settles Oxford City vs Leicester

Watson replaced Bobby De Cordova-Reid in the 78th minute and scored four minutes later. Page supplied the assist, completing an influential evening with a goal and two assists, as recorded in the match statistics and timeline.

The fourth goal gave Leicester breathing space. Oxford goalkeeper Jonny Maxted made further saves, while a late Leicester effort struck the crossbar.
