Wrexham CEO Michael Williamson has left the club after two years, with director Shaun Harvey taking over as acting chief executive.

The Championship club confirmed the change on Friday 6 November. Co-chairmen Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac thanked Williamson for his contribution to Wrexham’s promotion from League One, but no reason for his departure was given.

Harvey takes charge on an interim basis, with no timeframe announced for a permanent appointment.

Why has Wrexham CEO Michael Williamson left?

Wrexham have not publicly explained the decision. Their statement acknowledged Williamson’s work during a period of promotion and growth, without setting out the circumstances behind his exit.

As PA Sport reported, Williamson joined in May 2024 after previously working with Inter Milan, DC United and Miami FC.

His arrival came as Wrexham prepared for League One football. They subsequently secured promotion to the Championship, where they are now playing their second season.

“We thank Michael Williamson for his two years at Wrexham and for his work taking the club from League One to the Championship,” Mac and Reynolds said.

The owners also restated their commitment to supporters and the city.

“Since our takeover five years ago, Wrexham have had historic success on the pitch and won hearts all over the globe. We remain focused on our most important task: to make the Wrexham community proud.”

Shaun Harvey takes over as acting chief executive

Harvey brings experience as a former chief executive of both the English Football League and Leeds United.

He has worked with Wrexham’s ownership since the 2021 takeover and became a director in November 2023, according to Companies House records.

His appointment places an established member of the club’s leadership in charge while the longer-term position remains unresolved.

“Shaun Harvey has been an integral part of this journey from the beginning, and we know Shaun will give every support to Phil Parkinson and the lads on the pitch while keeping the broader Wrexham community roaring us on,” the co-chairmen added.

Williamson’s departure follows promotion and stadium development

Williamson’s tenure coincided with Wrexham’s return to the second tier and work on the club’s infrastructure.

In his foreword to the 2025/26 supporter charter, he outlined plans for the new Kop stand, investment in the academy and women’s team, and the search for a first-team training facility.

Those projects provide the backdrop to a leadership change at a club whose ambitions extend beyond establishing itself in the Championship.

What happens next at Wrexham?

Harvey will serve as acting CEO, while Phil Parkinson continues to lead the team. BBC Sport’s report on the departure confirms that no timetable has been set for appointing a permanent successor.

The club’s statement does not explain whether a recruitment process is under way. For now, the confirmed change is Williamson’s departure and Harvey’s interim appointment.
