Raymond Van Barneveld on record 32nd Ally Pally World Championships of Darts

Raymond van Barneveld is going back to Alexandra Palace, and this time the numbers make history as well as nostalgia. After Players Championship 34 in Leicester, the five-time world champion secured his place at the PDC World Darts Championship through the ProTour Order of Merit. Broadcasters framed it as a record 34th Worlds appearance, moving him clear at the top of that list. For a sport that thrives on Ally Pally nights and old heroes still daring the oche, that is a proper December story.

The decisive night was almost understated. An opening win over Jimmy van Schie was enough once rival results fell the right way. Van Barneveld later went out in the last 64, yet the qualification maths were already done. He had built the cushion with a quarter-final run at Players Championship 33. Thursday simply closed the door. Champions of his vintage rarely get clean fairytale scripts. They get awkward afternoons in Leicester that still send them to north London in December.

Raymond van Barneveld and the ProTour road

The Worlds field is built in layers. The top 40 on the two-year PDC Order of Merit qualify automatically. Another 40 come from the one-year ProTour ranking. Van Barneveld needed that second route, the grind of floor events rather than TV seeding alone. It is less glamorous than a Premier League stage walk-on, and more honest about where his year has been fought.

Not everyone made it. Crowd favourite Ricky Evans missed the cut after a second-round whitewash by Tommy Morris. Wesley Plaisier and Jeffrey de Zwaan also drop into the tour-card qualifier. Those names matter because Ally Pally without certain favourites always sparks an argument among fans. Barney making it while others scramble only sharpens that debate.

Around him, Players Championship 34 produced a different headline. Non-tour card holder Tommy Morris beat Luke Humphries 8-5 in the final, sealing it with a 161 checkout, and booked both the Grand Slam and the Worlds. That fairy-tale is covered in our Tommy Morris PC34 final report. It sits beside Van Barneveld’s qualification rather than replacing it.

Ally Pally still wants Raymond van Barneveld

The World Darts Championship runs from 11 December into early January at Alexandra Palace. Van Barneveld’s return keeps one of darts’ enduring draws on the December stage, complete with the orange army noise that still changes a session. He will not feature at the Players Championship Finals in Minehead from 27 to 29 November, a field that also lost Peter Wright, while Luke Littler did not enter enough Players Championship events to defend his Minehead title. The winter calendar is reshaping itself before a dart is thrown at Ally Pally.

There is sentiment here, and there is sporting steel. A 34th Worlds appearance sounds soft until you imagine the travel, the floor draws, and the years of proving you still belong. Van Barneveld has done that again. Supporters who grew up watching him lift world titles now get another December to wonder whether the old timing returns under the Ally Pally lights.

For PDC fans the practical reading is clear. Raymond van Barneveld is in the Worlds at Alexandra Palace. The ProTour path worked. The appearances record is his alone. And when the Palace fills for those early sessions, one of darts’ great names will walk out again with unfinished business rather than a farewell tour banner. That is why this qualification hits harder than a routine seed confirmation. It is history with a heartbeat, and Ally Pally still knows how to host that.
